Match preview: Glamorgan v Gloucestershire

6 June 2022

Gloucestershire resume their T20 Vitality Blast campaign with a trip over to Wales and Sophia Gardens, the home of Glamorgan, tomorrow evening (Tuesday 7 June).

Dale Benkenstein’s side were frustrated by persistent rain that caused Friday night’s match against Essex Eagles at the Seat Unique Stadium to be abandoned without a ball being bowled, but will be hoping to get back to winning ways v Glamorgan in Cardiff.

Gloucestershire are level on points with Glamorgan in Vitality Blast South Group, with both teams having accumulated five points from their opening round of fixtures. Glamorgan have played a game more than Glos and have amassed two wins out of six. Similar to The Shire’s rained-off match on Friday, Glamorgan’s fixture v Surrey on Sunday was washed out in the second innings meaning both teams walked away with just one point.

Captained by Jack Taylor, Gloucestershire are yet to win away from home in the competition and will be looking to find form on the road starting with the trip to Cardiff. The Shire’s two wins have both come at home v Sussex Sharks and Kent Spitfires, with their two defeats being suffered away at Middlesex and Surrey.

Glamorgan’s only wins have come against Essex Eagles at Sophia Gardens and v Sussex Sharks on the south coast. Tomorrow night’s hosts will be without Australian big-hitter Marnus Labuschagne, who has travelled to Sri Lanka to link up with the Australia squad.

A third win of the season would likely see Glos move into the top four for the first time this season ahead of Thursday’s much-anticipated West Country Derby v Somerset in Bristol on Thursday.

Gloucestershire will be without Naseem Shah, who has returned to Pakistan due to a family emergency, and Paul van Meekeren, who has suffered an ankle injury, both of whom were in the squad for The Shire’s last match v Essex Eagles.

Ben Wells and Matt Taylor have come into the 13-man squad that otherwise is unchanged from last week. Josh Shaw is once again involved as is loanee Zak Chappell, following his impressive display with the ball v Sussex Sharks.
