Marshall scoops honours at Awards dinner

2 October 2016

Long serving batsman Hamish Marshall took two awards as his 11 year stint at the Brightside Ground ended at the 2016 Awards Dinner.

Players, staff and supporters filled the Grace Room in the Bristol Pavilion to remember a summer where Hamish's achievement of passing 1000 Championship runs in his final season with the club before returning to New Zealand saw him take the Batsman of the Year award. Marshall also won the Spirit of Cricket award, in recognition of his sportsmanship and professionalism over more than a decade at the Club.

In addition to the two trophies, the popular Kiwi was presented with a collage of images to remember his career at Gloucestershire.

"I've been blessed to be here for so long" Marshall said. "There have been a few eras, and I've felt like a mother hen at times watching the lads develop. The club has evolved in a lot of ways, and it has to become a destination club. It's up to the players now. I've been supported from top to bottom, it's been a massive part of my life and I've had a great time."

Among the six players to receive their county caps was George Hankins, who collected the Champagne Moment award for his maiden Championship century at Northampton. The other players awarded caps were Josh Shaw, Cameron Bancroft, Graeme Van Buuren, Phil Mustard and James Bracey.

For the first time, the Gloucestershire Womens team were present to collect their awards after a promotion winning campaign, along with the ladies who took the new Western Storm side to Finals Day in their first season, where they were ultimately beaten by the winners, the Southern Vipers.

The Storm's General Manager Lisa Pagett, who is also the head of girls cricket in Gloucestershire, said "We have had a step change in the women's game this year. There is a lot of debate about franchises in the men's game but for us it was necessary and an exciting opportunity. Girls have been inspired by it and got involved in the game. Coming second as the Storm did by losing in the final, it will give the team strong motivation for next year."
