Mark Thorburn to lead Gloucestershire’s Metro Bank One Day Cup campaign

22 July 2024

Gloucestershire’s Lead Bowling Coach, Mark Thorburn, will stand-in as Head Coach for the Metro Bank One Day Cup campaign while Mark Alleyne continues in his coaching role at Welsh Fire in The Hundred.

Thorburn, who started out at Gloucestershire in 2006 as an analyst, will be supported in the role by Batting coach and Second XI coach, Owen Dawkins, as well as Tom Smith, who will operate in a player-coach capacity.

In his 18 years at Gloucestershire, Thorburn has held a handful of positions within the Club including Head of Talent Pathway and Bowling Coach. Now Lead Bowling Coach, Thorburn will head up Gloucestershire’s upcoming 50-over campaign with the ambition of once again reaching the knockout stages of the competition.

Captained by Jack Taylor, Shire will be looking to go one step further than last year’s excellent run in the tournament. In 2023, Gloucestershire reached the semi-finals following a string of scintillating one-day performances only to be beaten by eventual winners Leicestershire at Grace Road in the last four.

Speaking with excitement ahead of the Metro Bank One Day Cup, Mark Thorburn said: “I’m delighted and privileged to get the opportunity to lead this group of talented players in the One Day Cup, a tournament we have good pedigree in having reached the semi-finals last season.

“The playing group has a lot of strength and experience and we will be looking to build on the momentum gained from the Vitality Blast and bring that into this tournament. We’re aiming to at least qualify for the knockout stages of the competition and we’re all looking forward to the challenge.”

Gloucestershire get their Metro Bank One Day Cup campaign underway against Glamorgan in Cardiff on Thursday 25th July, before returning to Bristol on Sunday 28th July to take on Essex in the first of four home matches.
