Payne Sets Up Third Royal London Cup Win

5 August 2014

David Payne ripped through Leicestershire's top order as Gloucestershire strengthened their position at the top of Group A with a seven-wicket Royal London One-Day Cup win at the Bristol County Ground.

The left arm seamer's six-over opening spell after his side had won the toss saw him claim 4-23, sending back Niall O'Brien, Angus Robson, Matthew Boyce and Dan Redfern.

By the time rain interrupted the innings after 15 overs Leicestershire had moved to 61-4. An early lunch was taken at 1.45pm.

No further play was possible until 3.45pm, with the match reduced to 25 overs per side. Leicestershire progressed to 136 for eight, Greg Smith making 55 not out, and Gloucestershire's target was revised to 131 under Duckworth-Lewis.

The home side's target was revised to 131 under the Duckworth-Lewis system and they eased to victory with 13 balls to spare, Michael Klinger making an unbeaten 55 and Will Gidman 39 not out.

David Payne told this website: "It was a good toss to win because we always like to bowl when there is rain about.

"We have been talking about the importance of taking wickets up front in this competition so I am delighted to have made that contribution.

"While we wanted to do well in everything, the Royal London Cup was identified at the start of the season as suiting our strengths.

"It's great to have made such a good start, but we now face some really tough games, starting against Essex at Chelmsford on Friday."

With Gareth Roderick fit again after a broken finger and Will Tavare having made 77 on his one-day debut against Hampshire, Gloucestershire opted for an unchanged team, even though Alex Gidman is well on the way to recovery from his back problem.
