Legends Return As Part-Time Coaches

27 March 2013

Two legends of Gloucestershire CCC, Ian Harvey and Mike Smith (pictured), have returned to the club to assist the current squad of young players.

Both have assumed the role of part-time coaches. Ian will be helping the team hone their white ball skills for one-day competitions this summer, while Mike has agreed to lend his experience to the seam bowlers.

Gloucestershire Director of Cricket John Bracewell said: “We are delighted to welcome back Ian and Mike, two of the finest players to have represented the club.

“Ian will be helping us with our one-day skills, while Mike will work with the pace bowlers, particularly our current left-armers, David Payne and Matt Taylor.

“The knowledge and experience that Ian and Mike can pass on will be invaluable.”

Ian Harvey was an integral part of the Gloucestershire team who dominated the domestic one-day competitions in England between 1999 and 2003, winning six trophies during that period.  His skills as a hard-hitting batsman and seamer with a deceptive change of pace also earned him 73 one-day international appearances for Australia.

Mike Smith was also a key member of the Gloucestershire squad who made a habit of winning one-day competitions in the late 1990s and early 2000s. A left-arm seamer, who gave nothing away, his ability to swing the ball, allied to an exemplary line and length, brought him a Test Match appearance for England against Australia in 1997.
