Last chance to support floodlight application at the Bristol County Ground

2 February 2015

If you support Gloucestershire County Cricket Club and its ambitions both as a sporting venue to host International Cricket matches, and as part of the community, please take the time to go on line click here and say why you support the application for floodlights.

Gloucestershire County Cricket Club’s application for the installation of 6 permanent floodlights at the Bristol County Ground is due to be heard by Bristol City Council’s Development Control Committee B at its meeting on Wednesday 4 February 2015.  The meeting will take place at City Hall, College Green, Bristol, commencing at 5.30pm.

Since submitting its planning application to Bristol City Council in October 2014 the Club has met regularly with local residents, community groups and nearby neighbours about its plans and, where possible, the Club has made important changes in response to a number of concerns that were raised during the consultation process.  To view the application – and to read about these changes in more detail – click here.

Will Brown, Chief Executive, Gloucestershire County Cricket Club, said: “The Club has already been massively improved over the last two years and we are very grateful to local people for their patience while this work has been carried out.  However, in order to secure the Club’s presence here in the heart of Bristol, we need the ability to host the really big matches.

“Gloucestershire County Cricket Club has already been awarded 4 ICC men's World Cup matches in 2019 and to ensure the City of Bristol keeps these prestigious matches we need to have permanent floodlights in place.  Most First Class County Clubs around the country already have these in place, so they have a real advantage over us.

“Bristol is a world-class City in many ways, but it currently lacks the facilities to host International sport.  Bringing floodlights to the ground would not only allow us to host the Cricket World Cup matches we have been allocated, but also other matches such as the International T20s, the One-Day Internationals and the One-Day Women’s Cricket World Cup.  These matches would be great for sport in Bristol, but also wonderful news for tourism, traders and the City’s world profile.

“It’s estimated that each International match would be worth around a million pounds to the local economy in Bristol, bringing tourists from all over the world.  Gloucester Road traders strongly support the application, noting the benefits it would have for business.  But it’s not just about the money it would bring.  It’s about putting the heart of Bristol in its rightful place on the International stage.”
