Landmark For Hamish In Final Day Defeat
27 September 2013
Hamish Marshall became the fourth Gloucestershire batsman to pass 1,000 first class runs for the season on an otherwise disappointing final day of the LV=County Championship campaign at Cardiff.
It ended with an eight-wicket defeat by Glamorgan after a poor second innings batting effort had seen the visitors bowled out for 132.
That left the hosts needing just 102 for victory and, despite two more wickets for Will Gidman to give him 55 first class victims for the season, Murray Goodwin (50 not out) and Chris Cooke (31 not out) saw Glamorgan home with plenty of time to spare.
The day began with the Welsh county 271-9 in their first innings following the third day washout. They extended that to 306 all out, Michael Hogan making an unbeaten 42.
Gloucestershire then collapsed from 73-1 to 78-5, eventually losing their last nine wickets for just 59 runs as Jim Allenby claimed 4-16.
At the end of play stand-in skipper Hamish Marshall told this website: “It was a disappointing way to end what has been a season of progress in some respects.
“We should at least have been able to save the game. It wasn’t the sort of pitch on which you expect to be bowled out for 132 and some of our batting was indifferent.
“I believe we have deserved to finish higher in the table, but we are where we are and need to build on it again next summer.”
Of his own achievement in passing 1,000 runs, Hamish added: “It’s always a nice milestone for a batsman and for four of us to get there this season is a good effort.
“Chris Dent and Michael Klinger deserve special praise as openers. There are a lot of counties who would like to have to performers of their ability at the top of the order.”
Alex Gidman was the other Gloucestershire batsman to reach four figures. His final tally was 1,125, while Michael Klinger amassed 1,140, Chris Dent 1,128 and Hamish 1,007.
Gloucestershire took five points from the game and finish sixth in the Second Division, on the same number of points as fifth placed Worcestershire (167), having won one less game.
