Klinger To Lead Strong Team Against Aussies

18 June 2013

Michael Klinger will lead a strong Gloucestershire side against Australia A in the three-day tour match at Bristol, starting on Friday.

The skipper has specifically requested that he plays against his fellow countrymen and will be joined in the side by another Australian, Dan Christian.

Alex Gidman and Hamish Marshall will be rested for the game, but Gloucestershire plan to field a strong seam attack of David Payne, Will Gidman, James Fuller and Liam Norwell.

Cameron Herring will keep wicket, with Gareth Roderick also playing as a specialist batsman.

Gloucestershire Director of Cricket John Bracewell is rubbing hands at the prospect of taking on an Australia A side packed with players with something to prove.

John told this website: “We are fielding a strong side and we know the Aussies will be right up for it because there is the opportunity to earn Ashes places.

“Michael Klinger has expressed a wish to play in the game, as did Dan Christian, which means we will have two overseas players involved.

“With what Australia are going through at the moment, they may be only a couple of big innings away from a call-up over the next six months of international cricket.

“Both are champing at the bit to play and we know the Australia A players will be right up for it because they also know that no one is too far away from selection for the senior side.

“We will rest Alex and Hamish, but that gives me the opportunity to play Gareth Roderick as a batsman and return the gloves to Cameron Herring, which will continue the healthy competition between them for a first team place.

“We want to continue Will Gidman’s progress since he recovered from his ankle problem and David Payne, James Fuller and Liam Norwell will also play.”
