Klinger Injury Mars Defeat At Derby

21 August 2014

Sparkling half-centuries from Chris Dent (pictured) and Jack Taylor were not enough to save Gloucestershire from a 53-run Royal London One-Day Cup defeat by Derbyshire in the final Group A match at Derby.

And the game was marred further for the visitors by a serious injury to skipper Michael Klinger, who suffered a broken left arm when struck by a fast ball from Mark Footitt as his side launched their reply to Derbyshire's 271-7.

Gloucestershire were eventually bowled out for 218, with the captain unable to resume his innings. The result meant Derbyshire joined them in the quarter-finals, which will see Klinger's men take on Kent at Canterbury on Friday August 29th.

To earn a home quarter-final Gloucestershire needed to win and hope that Yorkshire or Essex slipped up. As it turned out, both rivals won.

David Payne, Will Gidman and Craig Miles claimed two wickets each after Derbyshire had been invited to bat first, but a fine innings of 96 from opener Billy Godleman helped the hosts to a challenging total.

With rain threatening, Dent went on the attack after the early setback of Klinger's injury, scoring 70 off just 58 balls, with 9 fours and two sixes.

The in-form Alex Gidman contributed 47 before falling lbw attempting a reverse sweep. But wickets had fallen steadily and Taylor's belligerent 53 off 36 deliveries, with 4 sixes, was not enough.

Klinger was sent for x-rays on his injury and after the game Hamish Marshall revealed: "Michael has broken his arm so he is pretty down at the moment.

"We weren't at our best today, but the pressure was off in terms have already made the quarter-finals and playing Kent at Canterbury will be an exciting challenge for our group."
