Klinger century not enough for Western Australia
16 October 2017
Western Australia fell devastatingly short of South Australia’s 330-run target, going down by just five runs in a final ball thriller at Drummoyne Oval.
South Australia secured their spot in the JLT One-Day Cup finals with the upset win, while Western Australia will do the same if they defeat the Cricket Australia XI on Tuesday at North Sydney Oval.
Redbacks captain Callum Ferguson won the toss, strolled to the middle at 1-13 then helped his side amass a total of 7-330.
Paceman Jhye Richardson was leading the attack for Western Australia to finish with figures of 3-60, and putting a stop to Ferguson’s run.
Gloucestershire One-Day captain, Michael Klinger opened the batting superbly, smashing another century for Western Australia in successive games. Klinger ended up on figures of 143 off 138. Michael was joined by Mitch Marsh (124) who embarked on a huge run chase, but both fell victim to swing specialist Chadd Sayers in the 48th over, after having shared a 241-run partnership.
WA needed 18 runs to win off the final over, with Richardson hitting the third ball for six. But Redbacks all-rounder Cameron Valente held his nerve with the ball to deliver his side a five-run win.
WA finished 6-325, suffering their first defeat of the tournament.
