Klinger calls for greater consistency

28 May 2013

Gloucestershire captain Michael Klinger is hoping for greater consistency from his side during the LV= County Championship Division Two match against Lancashire, which starts at Liverpool on Wednesday.

Gloucestershire go into the game on the back of a ten-wicket defeat to Worcestershire at New Road and Klinger, while encouraged by much of what he has seen this season, acknowledged that display was not good enough.

He said: "We need to improve in all areas on our performance at Worcester. We missed a few opportunities, which were key moments in the game. On a wicket which was doing a bit, we got to 170-4 and I thought that was a pretty good poostion. So, to be bowled out for 230 from that position was disappointing.

"I think with a young squad, particularly in four-day cricket, you expect some inconsistency. So, what we need to do is bridge the gap between our best and worst and if the worst can come up 20 to 25 per cent, that would make a big difference. At the moment, we're having a bit of an extreme either way.

"But the ability is certainly there with the younger guys and what's important as well is for the senior guys, like myself, Alex Gidman and Hamish Marshall, to keep stepping up. I think we have over the five games so far, but probably not all at once."

Gloucestershire will again be without strike bowler Ian Saxelby after he suffered a setback in his recovery from a shoulder problem.

Fellow new-ball bowler Will Gidman is also ruled out for a second successive Championship game by an ankle injury.

Ed Young comes into the squad in place of Jack Taylor after it was announced this afternoon that he has been suspended due to a suspected illegal bowling action.

Young all-rounder Graeme McCarter has also been named in a 12-man squad.
