Juniors follow in the footsteps of their heroes with Lord's victories

22 September 2015

Gloucestershire secured a clean sweep of victories at Lord’s as the First XI won the Royal London One-Day Cup and two of the county’s junior clubs were victorious in the first ever Gilbert Cup.

Frampton-on-Severn and Cam won in the boys’ and girls’ eight-a-side soft ball tournament respectively by beating teams from Surrey at the Home of Cricket.

Frampton beat Cranleigh while Cam defeated Spencer Park during the interval of Saturday’s final.

After playing on the hallowed turf in front of a crowd of thousands, the youngsters were presented with the trophy by England stars Steve Finn and Charlotte Edwards.

The England Women’s Captain was supported on the day by Cam’s Leanne Ealey, nine, who couldn’t take part in the match as she has been diagnosed with Acute Lympobalstic Leukaemia, but was still keen to be involved as Charlotte’s deputy.

Nicola Dickson, manager of Cam Cricket Club’s under 11 girls, said: “The girls, parents and supporters had a wonderful time and memories were made.

“It was fantastic for them to meet Steve Finn and Charlotte Edwards. Their presence just added to the special occasion.”

It was the climax of a competition that saw more than 1000 children taking part across the country representing each of the 18 first class counties.  The four teams made it to the finals by winning regional rounds.

Matt Dwyer, ECB director of participation and growth said: “Walking out onto Lord’s to play in a final is a moment every cricketer dreams of. Just like their senior Gloucestershire counterparts these two teams held their nerve and played some brilliant cricket.

“We are working tirelessly to improve participation at grassroots level and competitions like this give youngsters a great opportunity to be part of one of English cricket’s most prestigious events.”
