Jeremy Lloyds: Gloucestershire saddened by the death of former all-rounder and international umpire

21 November 2022

All at Gloucestershire Cricket are hugely saddened by the death of former player and umpire, Jeremy Lloyds, who has passed away aged 68.

Jeremy played for Gloucestershire between 1985 and 1991, playing in 162 First Class matches and 112 List-A matches for the Shire.

An extremely talented cricketer, Jeremy hit five First Class hundreds and 41 fifties for Gloucestershire, scoring an impressive 6439 runs at a touch over 33. His 188 wickets with a best of 5/72 cemented him as one of Gloucestershire’s finest all-rounders of his generation.

In List A cricket, Jeremy hit 1381 runs with four half-centuries to his name. With his right-arm off-spin, he took 23 wickets in the one-day format.

Jeremy began his professional career with fellow West Country club, Somerset, making his professional debut aged 24. He scored 4036 runs and took 133 wickets in 100 First Class matches for the Taunton side.

Jeremy will also be remembered for his illustrious umpiring career which lasted over 25 years. His impressive domestic performances led to him standing at international level, as he umpired five Tests, 18 ODIs, and one IT20 between 2000 and 2006.

The former off-spinner continued officiating until September 2020, fittingly standing in his final match in a West Country derby between Gloucestershire and Somerset in Taunton.

Jeremy’s final four-day fixture came at the Seat Unique Stadium in Gloucestershire’s Bob Willis trophy tie against Northamptonshire. The match was cut short due to a COVID-19 related issue on Day One, but Jeremy was able to share his thoughts on what was a historic umpiring career with Glos TV:

Jeremy will be fondly remembered by all at the club for his ready-smile, quick wit, kindness and warmth. Gloucestershire County Cricket Club offer our sincerest condolences to Jeremy’s wife Janine, and the rest of his friends and family at this difficult time.
