Jack's The Lad As Gloucestershire Hit Back

28 August 2012

Jack Taylor hit a typically aggressive 49 as Gloucestershire battled back from a potentially disastrous 9-4 to post 215 on the opening day of the LV=County Championship match with Yorkshire at Scarborough.

Will Gidman weighed in with 47, Ian Cockbain 30 and Jon Batty 27 as the middle order spared the blushes of the batsmen who had gone before.

By the close Yorkshire had replied with 61-2, having been 16-2 at one stage, and would have been in trouble if three catches had not been spilled.

Taylor top scored for Gloucestershire, scoring his runs off just 43 balls, with 7 fours and a six, before falling one short of a deserved half-century.

At the close of play skipper Hamish Marshall told this website: "That is Jack's style of batting and we don't try to curb him.

"He is a clean hitter of the ball, but today he also showed good cricket sense and he is developing as a batsman all the time."

Hamish won the toss and refused to blame the long journey up from Leicester the previous evening for the early collapse that saw Benny Howell, Dan Housego, Hamish himself and Rob Nicol dismissed in the first ten overs.

"We elected to bat on a good pitch and failed to cash in," said Hamish. "It was a long trip up, but there are no excuses.

"We are still in the game because our bowlers put it in the right areas and created five wicket-taking opportunities.

"Sadly a few catches went down, but if they perform the same way tomorrow we can put Yorkshire under some pressure."
