Jack Taylor steps down as Gloucestershire T20 captain

15 June 2023

Jack Taylor has stepped down as Gloucestershire’s T20 Captain after three-and-a-half years in the role.

Top-order batter Miles Hammond will take over the captaincy with immediate effect for Shire’s remaining seven Vitality Blast fixtures of the 2023 season.

Taylor was appointed T20 Captain in April 2020 following the retirement of Club legend Michael Klinger. In his first year as Captain, Taylor guided Gloucestershire to the Club’s first appearance at Finals Day since 2007 and almost led the team to the final, albeit for a narrow defeat against Surrey in the semi-final at Edgbaston.

Under Taylor’s leadership a number of up and coming first-team players were given opportunities to impress on the T20 stage, many of whom have gone on to become mainstays in Gloucestershire’s white and red ball sides.

Speaking of his decision to step down, Taylor said: “I’ve loved every minute of captaining our T20 team over the past four seasons. One particular highlight was reaching Finals Day in 2020 for the first time in 13 years.

“I have built up a clear role in the T20 side over the last few seasons but now feel like it’s the right time for me to step back and focus on my own game. My ultimate goal is to deliver match winning performances for the club in T20 cricket and to build on last season’s 50-over campaign.”

Dale Benkenstein, Head Coach at Gloucestershire Cricket, said: “It has been a pleasure working with Jack as Captain for the last two years, he has been a great leader for Gloucestershire in T20 cricket and will continue to play a big part in the squad.

“I’m hoping Jack is able to play a big role in this T20 campaign and in the future, and I’d also like to thank Jack for everything he’s done for me over the last 18 months and also for the Club in his time as Captain.”
