Innings Defeat Confirmed At Chelmsford

7 April 2012

It took Essex just over an hour to wrap up victory by an innings and 38 runs over Gloucestershire in the opening LV County Championship match of the season.

But at least the visitors went down with guns blazing, adding 91 to their overnight score of 55-5 in just 23.2 overs, with Ed Young and Ian Saxelby sharing a spirited last wicket stand of 40.

That still left Gloucestershire well short of making Essex bat again. The home side took 23 points from the match, while their opponents claimed three.

With the result virtually beyond doubt, Gloucestershire batted positively at the start of day three, Will Gidman (39) and Ian Cockbain (21) extending their sixth-wcket partnership to 54 before Gidman was lbw to Graham Napier, who finished with 5-58.

But soon it was 106-9 as Cockbain was caught behind off David Masters, while James Fuller and Paul Muchall departed cheaply.

Young was last man out for 23, leaving Saxelby unbeaten on 24 in a total of 146 all out,
