Injured Will To Miss Surrey Game

9 May 2014

Will Gidman will miss the LV=County Championship match against Surrey at The Oval, starting on Sunday, because of injury.

And the all-rounder is also expected to sit out the start of the NatWest Blast T20 tournament, which sees his side entertain arch-rivals Somerset at Bristol next Friday evening.

Will is suffering from a knee problem, but it is not thought to be serious and he is targeting a return in the Championship match against Kent at Bristol, starting on Sunday week.

Director of cricket John Bracewell said: “Will is feeling something in his lower hamstring and outside knee, which needs to be cleared up.

“He has been put on a strengthening programme to help with that and we don’t think he will be out for long.”

Will himself told this website: “It’s a niggly thing that I have had for a few weeks. The scan results have come back all clear and, with a bit of strengthening up in the right areas, I should be fine.

“A few days of specific gym work will help with that. The Somerset game is probably going to come a bit soon, but the main thing is that I am fit again to play Championship cricket as soon as possible.”

Benny Howell is expected to replace Will at The Oval, with Craig Miles not yet considered ready following his early season back problem and David Payne still out with a bruised heel.

John Bracewell is hoping both bowlers will come into contention for the Somerset game.

Spinners Tom Smith and Jack Taylor are also in the squad of 13 to face Surrey. John and skipper Michael Klinger will assess the pitch before deciding on a final eleven.
