Ian Harvey Helps Celebrate National Cricket Day

17 May 2012

Former Gloucestershire and Australia player Ian Harvey will join schoolchildren at St. Anne’s C.E. School, South Gloucestershire, and thousands of other pupils in schools across the country for a day of cricket on Tuesday May 22 as part of Brit Insurance National Cricket Day.

Like many of Chance to Shine’s 4,000 schools, St. Anne’s is turning its timetable over to a day of Caribbean and cricket-themed lessons to tie in with the West Indies’ tour of England. Pupils from St. Anne’s C.E. School will take part in Caribbean and cricket-themed lessons in class, and will take part in a cricket session in the playground.

The event is one of ten flagship media events taking place across the country to celebrate Chance to Shine’s national Caribbean carnival of cricket in schools. Hundreds of schools have registered for Brit Insurance National Cricket Day, through their local County Board, and are planning cricket-themed lessons in class, coaching in the playground, competitions at local cricket clubs and beach cricket festivals.

The Gloucestershire Cricket Board has 99 schools involved in Chance to Shine with the majority of them taking part in differing ways, ranging from all day cricket festivals to Caribbean themed art workshops.

Chance to Shine supported by Brit Insurance is the biggest grass-roots sport development programmes ever undertaken in Britain. It was launched in 2005 by Governor of the Bank of England Sir Mervyn King to reverse the decline of cricket in state schools and has now brought cricket to over one million schoolchildren.
