Ian Cockbain signs for Gloucestershire Cricket until 2017

21 November 2014

Gloucestershire Cricket is delighted to announce that Ian Cockbain has penned a deal to extend his contract with the Club until 2017.

Ian, who made his First Class debut for Gloucestershire in April 2011, signed for the Club having excelled during three seasons training and playing in the MCC Young Cricketers’ programme at Lord’s.  Prior to that Ian played Second XI cricket for Lancashire County Cricket Club.

2014 brought Ian three T20 half-centuries, and a match-winning 98 not out v Worcestershire to help secure the Club’s quarter final place in the Royal London One-Day Cup quarter finals.  Earlier in the season, Ian batted through the last day of a LV= County Championship match v Surrey which saw him make his highest score to-date (and third century of his career).  Having batted for nearly 9 hours, Ian posted 151 not out as Gloucestershire forced an improbable draw on the final day in front of a home crowd.

Commenting on his contract extension, Ian said: “I am really pleased to have signed a new deal with Gloucestershire.  I believe there are some very exciting times coming up for our squad.  It was obviously a big loss to see the Gidman brothers leave, but this has now presented a fantastic challenge and opportunity for me to step up as one of the senior guys and to take on more responsibility in the group.”

Director of Cricket, John Bracewell, added: “It’s great news to have signed Ian as he is in the prime of his career in regards to an ideal batting age.  He has predominantly been used as a short form player over the last few seasons, but his innings of great maturity against Surrey last season showed everyone that he can now move smoothly from white to red ball.  If he can nail down a permanent place in all forms regularly he has the tactical nous to one day captain the side.”
