Benny Howell says he wants to help Gloucestershire challenge for silverware after signing a new two year deal with the club.

The 26-year-old allrounder – who made his first ever First Class hundred against Leicestershire at Cheltenham earlier this month – said he had no hesitation in putting pen to paper.

He said: “There were a number of things. The way the club is going, the way the ground’s been developed and the changes that have come in this year with the new coaches.

“I love Bristol, I love playing with the guys and believe in the next couple of years we have a chance to win some trophies.”

Benny, who was born in France and came up through the Hampshire Academy, has cemented his place in the team across all three formats this season, enjoying particular success in the NatWest T20 Blast.

Renowned for his subtle variations in pace, he has the best economy rate (7.25) of any seamer to bowl more than 50 overs in this year’s competition.  He is also the third highest runscorer (173) of any player to take 17 wickets or more.

Looking ahead Benny says he wants to continue to develop his allround game and help the squad become a force across all three competitions.

He said: “I want to keep on becoming more of an allrounder, making an impact with the ball and with the bat.

“I hope the hundred will be a stepping stone to getting more runs and I hope to make the most of my chances to bat higher up the order.

“As a team our bowling has been unbelievable. The guys have been running in, taking wickets and restricting runs. I think if we can get runs on the board with that we can go a long way whether it’s this season or the next or the next.

“I think over the next couple of years this is a very good place to be.”

Gloucestershire head coach Richard Dawson said he was pleased to have secured Benny’s services for a further two years.

He said: “He’s worked hard to earn his new contract.

“He’s been a consistent performer in one-day cricket over the last few years and moving forward he will be a valuable player in the squad across all formats.

“ He has done well in the T20 this year and he’s now starting to put decent performances together in the County Championship as well , including his first First Class hundred a couple of weeks ago.”
