Herring Makes Championship Debut

8 April 2013

Teenaged wicketkeeper Cameron Herring made his Gloucestershire debut in the opening LV=County Championship match of the season against Essex at Chelmsford.

The 18-year-old was named in the squad after playing in the final warm-up game against MCC Young Cricketers, while Richard Coughtrie and Gareth Roderick are featuring in a three-day Second XI fixture against Surrey at The Kia Oval.

Herring, from Abergavenny, is fresh out of the club's Academy, but played regularly for the second XI last summer. He was hoping to break into the first team this season and his chance has come earlier than expected.

Ian Saxelby and Paul Muchall were ruled out by injuries, but Will Gidman was named in the side after recovering from a thigh problem.

Jack Taylor was preferred to Ed Young as the spin option in a squad of 12, but eventually named as 12th man.

James Fuller, David Payne and Liam Norwell offer seam bowling options, along with Will Gidman.

New skipper Michael Klinger led the side and is looking for four days of intensive cricket to launch the new campaign.

Director of cricket John Bracewell said: "We finished bottom of the Championship last season and I know we are better than that. It is one thing saying that and another to go out and prove it.

"We can no longer hide behind the inexperienced tag. We need to see some improvement and we need to see it now."
