Handscomb set to follow Australia A call-up with county debut

31 March 2015

Gloucestershire’s new overseas signing Peter Handscomb has been selected for the upcoming Australia A tour of India.

And fans will have a chance to watch him in action at the Bristol County Ground next week with the batsman expected to play a part in the match against Cardiff MCCU (April 7-9).

Peter’s call-up comes on the back of a stellar domestic season for  the 23-year-old who helped Victoria clinch the four-day Sheffield Shield title with 647 runs at an average of 53.91.

He also averaged 45 on one-day cricket and was one of only two players – along with Glos team mate Michael Klinger – to make a Big Bash League hundred.

Handscomb, who can also keep wicket, has been picked in both the four-day and one-day squads which will be captained by full-international Usman Khawaja. Other big names in the touring party include World Cup winner Glenn Maxwell and promising paceman Patrick Cummins (22) who makes his long-awaited return to red ball cricket after injury.

They Australia A squads will play two four-day matches and five one-day games throughout the tour, which takes place in July.

His absence from the Gloucestershire squad during that time will be softened by the fact that it coincides with Michael Klinger’s return to Bristol In June. Handscomb is expected to link back up with his county colleagues following the conclusion of the tour.

A former Australia Under 19 international, he also played one match for his country’s second string against the England Lions in 2013.
