Hammond Reflects On Tough First Day

5 June 2013

Miles Hammond reflected on his first-class debut for Gloucestershire after Glamorgan had run up 318-5 on the opening day of the LV=County Championship match at Bristol.

The young off-spinner, granted time off from school to play in the game, sent down 20 economical overs for 64 runs as a century from Jim Allenby and 96 not out from Murray Goodwin put the visitors on top after losing the toss.

Glamorgan were 85-4 at one stage as Craig Miles and David Payne claimed two wickets each. But even the strong fightback by the visitors couldn't spoil a day Hammond will long remember.

He told this website: “I didn’t expect to be playing in the first team this season, so this is all a huge bonus.

“Playing against a player of Murray Goodwin’s calibre is a big challenge and I’m sure I’ll benefit from the experience.

“I bowled a few loose balls, but otherwise I felt it went okay on a really flat pitch. I was a bit surprised when I sent down some really good deliveries and he still sent them to the boundary.

“But that is all part of the learning process for me and I didn’t allow it to affect me. He is a very good player and I can only learn from people like that.

“Gloucestershire have been really supportive of me and my long-term ambition is to play regularly in the first team and also for England.

“But in the short-term, I still have another year to go at school and I know the focus has to be on getting on an education, because cricket will inevitably come to an end one-day and I need to be able to do different jobs.”
