Hammond In Squad To Face Yorkshire

1 June 2013

Seventeen-year-old off-spinner Miles Hammond has been named in Gloucestershire’s squad for tomorrow’s YB40 match against Yorkshire at Headingley.

The England Under-19 player suddenly finds himself the county’s first choice spinner following Jack Taylor’s suspension pending an investigation of his action and Ed Young’s wrist injury, sustained on the opening day of the LV=County Championship match with Lancashire at Liverpool.

Cheltenham-born Hammond has been involved with Gloucestershire since 2009, progressing through the club’s junior and senior academies and making his second XI debut at the age of just 14.

A competent middle-order batsman, he has represented England at Under-17 and Under-19 level.

Gloucestershire skipper Michael Klinger said: “There is suddenly a big opportunity for Miles and I hope he grasps it with both hands.

“We are not yet sure how long Ed Young is going to be out. He was struck by the ball in the field and we are awaiting the results of scans to see if his wrist is broken or whether there is just some soft tissue damage.”

Gloucestershire go into the Yorkshire game top of Group C, one point ahead of neighbours Somerset, who have a game in hand.

A fourth win from six games would put Klinger’s in a strong position in a competition where a good start is seen as essential to hopes of qualification for the semi-finals.
