Hamish Ton Leads Way AT Southampton

13 June 2013

Hamish Marshall hit 114 as Gloucestershire ran up 349-7 on the second day of the LV=County Championship match with Hampshire at Southampton,

The 34-year-old batsman faced 184 balls, hitting 13 fours and 2 sixes, as his side moved to the verge of a fourth batting bonus point, with power to add a fifth tomorrow.

At the close Hamish told this website: "It was my 21st first class hundred and every one has felt special, I hope there is time for a few more yet.

"It was overcast at the start and Hampshire put us in hoping to get early wickets. They got one, but Chris Dent did a great job in batting through the morning session and that set things up for the rest of us after lunch.

"The ball was still doing a bit if you put it in the right areas, but we batted well and managed to take advantage of anything loose.

"I didn't want to spend too much time in the 90s so when the opportunity arose I was positive and managed to get to three figures with a couple of boundaries.

"Now we need to push on tomorrow and get the biggest score possible so we can try to force a result.

"Hampshire are in a similar position to us in the table so hopefully they will want to go for a win too and we will see an exciting final day."

After the first day washout, Hampshire won the toss and elected to field, making an early breakthrough when Michael Klinger was lbw to Sohail Tanvir for four.

Gloucestershire looked in trouble at 56-3 when Dan Housego and Alex Gidman fell for ten and 11 respectively, Dimitri Mascarenhas and David Balcombe being the successful bowlers.

But Dent (35) helped Marshall take the score to 123 before Benny Howell contributed a half-century to a fifth-wicket stand of 106.

Howell eventually departed for 54, bowled by Sean Ervine, having faced 77 balls and hit 8 fours. But Will Gidman carried on the good work and Marshall reached his ton with a four and a six off successive deliveries from Liam Dawson.

It was 289-6 when he fell and then Gareth Roderick helped add a further 49 before Gidman was caught off Mascarenhas for 42.

Roderick was unbeaten on 24 at stumps at the end of a good day for his team. For more details of day two at Southampton click on Match Reports.
