Hamish Nears Landmark As Lancashire Win Title
20 September 2013
Hamish Marshall needs 36 runs in the last LV=County Championship match of the season against Glamorgan to become the fourth Gloucestershire batsman to reach 1,000 for the season.
The club’s vice-captain was dismissed for 26 as Gloucestershire were bowled out for 209 before the match against Lancashire petered out into a draw on the final day, a result which saw the visitors clinch the Division Two title.
Now Hamish will be hoping to follow Michael Klinger, Alex Gidman and Chris Dent in getting to the 1,000 milestone during the match at Cardiff, starting next Tuesday.
He will captain the side in that game as skipper Klinger is travelling home to Australia on Sunday for the start of their domestic programme.
Alex Gidman top scored with 45 in a disappointing Gloucestershire batting effort after they began the final day against Lancashire on 90-3.
It took a last wicket stand of 54 between Matt Taylor and David Payne to secure a batting point. Lancashire then made 195-2 in their second innings before the players shook hands at 4.20pm.
Gloucestershire took six points and Lancashire nine. England and Wales Cricket Board chief executive David Collier was at the ground to present visiting captain Glen Chapple with the Division Two trophy after the game.
Michael Klinger looked on enviously, telling this website: "It would be nice to think it will be us celebrating this time next season.
"We have a lot to work on, but our batting unit had performed well and we know we have some improving young bowlers so there is a lot to look forward to.
"We weren't at our best today, but Lancashire have shown all season that they are a quality side and we can certainly look to learn from the way they operate."
