Hamish Inspires First One-Day Win

6 May 2013

Hamish Marshall blasted 68 off 62 balls to lead Gloucestershire to a nine-wicket Yorkshire Bank 40 win over the Unicorns at Wormsley.

The county needed only 23.2 overs to chase down a target of 154, with skipper Michael Klinger contributing an unbeaten 52 and Chris Dent a rapid 29 not out, including 2 sixes and 3 fours.

Earlier David Payne had taken 3-29 and there were two wickets each for Will Gidman and Ed Young as Gloucestershire restricted the Unicorns to a modest 153-9 from their 40 overs.

That never looked likely to be enough and openers Marshall and Klinger put the outcome beyond doubt with a partnership of 111 in 19.3 overs.

Marshall hit 8 fours and 2 sixes, while Klinger contented himself with 5 fours in his 67-ball innings.

It was a much needed result for Gloucestershire after the heavy defeat by Leicestershire in their opening YB40 game and left the Unicorns to the end of a thrashing for the second successive day.

Only Michael O'Shea, with 41, and veteran Keith Parsons (28) could make much impression on a much-improved Gloucestershire bowling performance.

That was typified by Will Gidman, who had proved expensive against Leicestershire, but bounced back to form, conceding only 21 from his eight overs.

After the game Michael Klinger told this website: "We had a meeting this morning to discuss what we didn't do well in the Leicestershire game and the main message was to get the basics right.

"The response from the team was all that I could have asked. We varied our pace better and bowled some good slower balls on a pitch where the ball tended to sit up when you hit a length.

"We needed to hit the deck hard and did just that for much of the time. The bowlers were backed up in the field so it was a good day for us.

"Hamish came out and played some quality shots when we batted, which meant I was able to play a more controlled innings.

"When Chris Dent came in we decided to take the power play in a bid to finish the game as quickly as possible and it paid off.

"After the disappointment against Leicestershire I couldn't be happier with the result and performance."
