Hamish Hundred Puts Glamorgan On Back Foot
21 June 2014
Hamish Marshall hit his second LV=County Championship century of the season as Gloucestershire ran up 308 for five on the opening day against Glamorgan at Bristol.
It was a good day for the stand-in skipper at a sun-drenched County Ground where he won an important toss so the team could take advantage of excellent batting conditions.
Hamish contributed 109 to the total, facing 173 balls and hitting 7 fours and a six. He shared a fourth-wicket stand of 145 with Ian Cockbain, who followed up his heroics against Surrey with 51.
Will Tavare made 77 on his return after a leg injury and, with Alex Gidman scoring 26, Gloucestershire could feel happy with a solid batting effort.
Michael Hogan was the pick of the Glamorgan attack with 3-39, producing a particularly hostile spell from the Ashley Down Road End after lunch.
But although he claimed the early wicket of Chris Dent and that of Tavare, the Australian could not swing the day his side's way.
At the close Hamish Marshall told this website: "It was pretty much an ideal day for us because the pitch is not that easy. The ball is not coming onto the bat and we'll certainly take 308-5.
"It was an interesting start to the morning when first Maxie (Michael Klinger) rocked up with what looked like a broken toe and then Cameron suffered what might well be a broken finger.
"But there is now a great opportunity for Patrick Grieshaber to come into the dressing room and experience a Championship game. We won't be putting any pressure on him and I hope it proves an enjoyable experience.
"I was happy with the way I played, apart from one rush of blood in the ninethies when I tried to move things along too quickly, which wasn't a great idea.
"Tomorrow we need to see how things go in the first hour because we want to ensure a really decent score from here. After that hopefully we can apply some pressure."
