Gloucestershire’s Vitality Blast clash with Hampshire to turn Pink 4 Syd in partnership with MND Association
9 April 2025
Gloucestershire Cricket is honoured to announce Pink 4 Syd in partnership with the Motor Neurone Disease Association, in tribute to Club President David ‘Syd’ Lawrence.
On Friday June 20, during Gloucestershire’s T20 match against Hampshire, the Seat Unique Stadium will turn pink to raise vital funds and awareness for Motor Neurone Disease (MND).
During the match, Gloucestershire players will wear limited edition pink adidas playing shirts, and supporters are encouraged to wear something pink to show their support for Syd and the MND Association.
Replica pink shirts will be available for purchase at the Club shop throughout the match, with all profits going to the MND Association.
Supporters can also contribute by adding an optional donation when purchasing tickets for the Vitality Blast match through the Club’s online e-ticketing site or at the main Club reception.
David ‘Syd’ Lawrence was diagnosed with MND last summer after first experiencing a tingling sensation in his toes and problems with his right leg. After weeks in hospital and numerous tests, he was diagnosed with MND – a terminal, neurological condition which affects more than 5,000 people in the UK at any time.
Now almost a year on from his diagnosis, David is being supported by the MND Association, which exists to offer help and support to people living with motor neurone disease and their families while investing in research into potential new treatments.
Syd spoke ahead of the event to highlight his delight that funds raised from the match would be donated to the Association to support its work.
He said: “Gloucestershire has been my only County Club and having played for many years, I made many good friends.
“Playing cricket across the country with these teammates has given me many fond memories. For the Club to dedicate a T20 match to celebrate my love of cricket and to support the essential work of the MND Association means a good deal to me and my family.
“My family and myself have benefited considerably from the support of the local MND Care Coordinator, Keri. This role would not be there without the funding from the MND Association. I hope we can raise as much money as possible for the charity to support all the work they do, giving essential support to families living with this illness.
“I would like to thank all at the Club and the Association for making this happen. I hope we can fill the ground and see everyone wearing Pink to bring lots of colour to the day.”
Tanya Curry, Chief Executive of the MND Association said: “David is an icon in the world of cricket and everyone at the MND Association is delighted to learn that this special match will be held in his honour.
“Since he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) last summer, David and his family have shown tremendous strength and courage in sharing their story, helping to raise vital funds and awareness of this truly devastating disease. Our community is forever grateful for his kindness and support.
“The outpouring of love we have seen towards David and his family is testament to the person he is – both on and off the pitch. This match will not only be a celebration of his many achievements, but also of the team spirit and strength of the cricket community.”
Gloucestershire Cricket invites all Members and supporters to be part of this special occasion by wearing something pink in honour of Syd during the match, to raise vital funds and awareness for the MND Association. Whether it's purchasing a replica shirt, making a donation, or simply wearing pink on the day, every contribution will help make a difference in the fight against motor neurone disease.
