18 November 2024

Gloucestershire is excited to announce the Academy intake for the 2024/25 Winter Training Programme.

The 11 talented young players have been selected following a rigorous selection process and will spend the next few months focusing on technical development, match readiness, and personal growth.

The selected Academy players are:

Alfie Johnson (Right-Arm Off-Spin), Zaman Shafi (Wicketkeeper/Batter, pictured above), Zain Syed (Batter), Logan Bowden (Wicketkeeper/Batter), Rhys Baker (Right-Arm Pace Bowler), Dexter Trego (All-Rounder, Right-Arm Seam), James Matravers (All-Rounder, Right-Arm Seam), Will Sweeting (Wicketkeeper/Batter), Jack Baker (Left-Arm Pace Bowler), Oscar Moore (All-Rounder, Right-Arm Seam), and Rhys Pollitt (All-Rounder, Right-Arm Seam).

On Sunday 10th November the academy players, along with their families, gathered for the intake and induction day at the Seat Unique Stadium where they were introduced to the Academy's programme. Joined by Academy staff and former Gloucestershire player and current Board member, David Graveney, the players and their families were briefed on what lies ahead for this year’s cohort.

The intake day provided a chance for both players and parents to discuss the club's vision and set expectations, and for families to meet with staff across all areas of support, from coaching lead by Paul Muchall, Head coach boys Talent Pathway, to science and medicine. This year’s intake reflects Gloucestershire’s commitment to building an environment that develops not just strong cricketers, but well-rounded athletes prepared for the challenges of the modern game. Following the induction, the players dove straight into fitness assessments led by the science and medicine team, marking the start of their training journey.

Laura Charles-Price, Head of Talent Pathways, expressed her excitement about the incoming group: “The level of talent we see this year is exciting. Each of these players brings something special to the table, and we’re thrilled to support their journey through our Academy programme.

"We’re looking forward to nurturing their potential, building their skills, and helping them develop both on and off the field. This cohort has the drive and focus to make a real impact, and we believe they can become the backbone of Gloucestershire cricket in the years to come.”

The Academy programme will now move into full swing, with players engaging in skill development, match simulations, and performance reviews. The staff, led by experienced coaches and mentors, will work closely with each player to craft individual development plans, ensuring tailored support and guidance throughout the season.

With a focus on building growth in all aspects of the game, the Academy is primed to equip these players with the tools they need to succeed in their cricketing journey.

Everyone at Gloucestershire wishes all within the Academy the very best of luck for the upcoming season.
