Gloucestershire v Hampshire | Match Preview
18 July 2022
Gloucestershire return to Cheltenham on Tuesday for the 150th Visit Cayman Islands Cricket Festival as they host Hampshire in round ten of the LV= County Championship.
Last time out the Shire fell to a nine-wicket defeat at the hands of Essex, picking up just two points from the trip to Chelmsford.
Thanks to Zafar Gohar, Gloucestershire reached 252 in their second innings before being bowled out, leaving Essex 73 for victory. The 27 year-old posted 81 from 75 balls that included 10 fours and three maximums.
In the last meeting between the two teams Hampshire began the final day needing eight wickets, Gloucestershire required another 257 runs in what would have been the second greatest chase in their history and a draw wasn’t out the question either. With 25 overs remaining the home side took the final wicket of Ajeet Singh Dale to secure a 87 run victory.

Glos head into the game at the bottom of the table hoping for a win in what promises to be a warm week in Cheltenham. The Shire have played nine, lost six and drawn three so far this season. Whereas visitors Hampshire sit in second place just 15 points behind leaders Surrey having won six, drawn one and lost two.
In their last fixture the visitors had a convincing eight wicket victory at Warwickshire picking up 23 points in the process.
Glos will be without Matt Taylor who has sustained a stress fracture in his foot and will miss the remainder of the season. David Payne is also missing from the squad as the club try to manage his workload.
The Shire welcome back Zak Chappell into the squad after he re-joined on loan for the two County Championship games to be played at Cheltenham. Jared Warner also returns to the squad along with George Scott who both played in the innings and 95 run win over Essex 2nds last week.
Steve Snell, Performance Director at Glos Cricket, said: “We’re excited that Zak has rejoined us on loan for the two County Championship matches at Cheltenham. With Zak’s pace and bounce, he will be a valuable asset for us.
“He’s also a great character to have around in the dressing room and he’s already made a great impression, so we’re excited to have him back for the next couple of matches.”
Due to the extreme hot weather conditions forecast for day one of the Cheltenham Cricket Festival tomorrow (Tuesday), the end of play has been moved forward by 90 minutes to 4:30pm.
The decision has been taken in unison by both Gloucestershire and Hampshire in the interest of spectator and player welfare, to allow everyone in attendance to avoid the extreme heat that is expected towards the end of the day.
The Club has acted in line with advice from the ECB to alter the hours of play for the match v Hampshire tomorrow, meaning the new hours of play are now as follows:
The start of play will remain at 11am and will be followed by three 90 minute sessions, with the lunch and tea intervals remaining as 40 minutes and 20 minutes respectively.
Start of play - 11am
Lunch - 12:30pm
Tea - 2:40pm
Close of play - 4:30pm
To make up for time lost on Tuesday, an extra 30 minutes will be added to days two, three and four with morning and afternoon sessions of 2hr 15min in length and an evening session of 2hrs in length.
