Gloucester Road Traders team up as Bristol prepares to host England v India

With just a week to go until 15,000 cricket fans head to the Bristol County Ground in the first of the Royal London One Day International series, traders along Britain’s longest high street of independent shops are helping build the atmosphere.

From today, staff at shops, bars and restaurants are wearing t-shirts in the colours of the flags of both countries with the slogan ‘East Meets…The West Country’ as well as painting their faces and serving specially themed food and drink.

“The idea is traders get on board and be as creative as they like so when local shoppers as well as spectators visit Gloucester Road, they feel the buzz.” Roz Hutchings, Head of Community Engagement explains. “We’ve been delighted with the reaction from the businesses. For example, Sarah Thorp at Room 212 has created an Indian themed window display using paintings, prints and jewellery by Bristol artists as well as offering 10% off a range of products for ticket holders.

At Moodles, staff there are also handing out 10% discount vouchers to ticket holders.” Traders are also offering discounts to fans who can show a match day ticket between now and the end of Bank Holiday Monday.

“A number of pubs along Gloucester Road have been working with the club this summer on the Friday night NatWest Blast T20 matches and it’s been a real success, encouraging fans to visit businesses on Gloucester Road after the matches. Now we want the spectators at the ODI to do the same so the traders feel the economic benefit from Bristol hosting international matches and to also showcase what Gloucester Road has to offer so fans want to return.”

Joe’s Bakery – wearing special t-shirts to promote the match in the week leading up to the game

Shake Wrap and Roll – free drink with every wrap

Osna Therapy Centre – 10/20 minute head or foot massage, £5/£10 per session

Pearces Hardware – window display

Room 212 – window display and 10% off selected products

Moodles – 10% discount voucher

Cake Bristol – themed cupcakes for £1

The Sportsman - wearing special t-shirts to promote the match in the week leading up to the game
