We've Come So Far Says Bracewell After Defeat

5 July 2013

John Bracewell was keen to dwell on the positives after Gloucestershire had slipped to the narrowest of Friends Life t20 defeats in front of a 7,500 sell-out crowd at Taunton.

Somerset sealed victory off the penultimate ball of a memorable game, having been set a challenging 191 to win.

While disappointed to lose such a tight contest, Bracewell felt Gloucestershire's performance reflected the progress made in one-day cricket over recent seasons.

He told this website: "We lost because of the little things that make all the difference in T20 cricket - a dropped catch, too many wides and some fumbles in the field.

"But to run a team of Somerset's experience and ability so close is something we couldn;t have expected to do a couple of years ago.

"We have come a long way in a short space of time and can take huge positives from the game, James Fuller and David Payne kept the pressure on Somerset right to the end, even when they looked to have the game under control.

"Ian Cockbain is now regularly producing quality one-day innings and to reach 190 after a relatively slow start was a tremendous effort by the batsmen.

"We were up against one of the strongest teams in the country and took them all the way. If we continue to perform like that and just tidy up the little areas that cost us we will be a match for anyone.

Michael Klinger won the toss and elected to bat first. At the end of their 20 overs Gloucestershire had scored 190-6, Cockbain leading the way with 63 off just 36 balls, Hamish Marshall making 49 and Alex Gidman 36.

Somerset won a thriller by scoring 192-6, Yasir Arafat hitting the winning boundary off the only ball he faced, with Craig Kieswetter making 89 not out. Fuller took 3-33.

The visitors named an unchanged team for their third game in the competition, while for Somerset it was their first fixture in the Midlands/Wales/West Division.
