Glos Women beat Derbyshire Falcons by nine runs in season opener
19 April 2025
Gloucestershire edged out Derbyshire Falcons by nine runs in a thrilling opening contest of their 50-over campaign at the Seat Unique Stadium.
The match was shortened to 38 overs per side in Bristol due to early morning rain, but that didn’t stop Glos from picking up a crucial early-season win in the Metro Bank One Day Cup Women's League 2.
Batting first, the hosts posted 206, with important contributions from Liv Daniels and Emily Geach (both scoring 38), and a quickfire 32 from Izzy Patel.
Patel accelerated the run rate in the final 10 overs - a burst of scoring that proved vital as the match unfolded.
Caitlin McDonald was the pick of the bowlers for Derbyshire, finishing with figures of 3 for 46.
In response, the Falcons looked to be on course for an impressive victory, with Lara Shaw, on loan from The Blaze, reaching her half-century off 57 balls.
Just as the game looked to be slipping away from Gloucestershire, Alice Hill made the breakthrough, removing Shaw for 74 - stumped by Somerset loanee Jess Hazell.
That wicket sparked a dramatic collapse, with seven wickets falling in the final 12 overs. Hill led the charge, finishing with 4 for 49.
Despite Derbyshire staying in the hunt, Gloucestershire held their nerve with disciplined bowling at the death, ultimately restricting the Falcons to 197/8.
A well-rounded team performance sees Gloucestershire claim vital early points in Women's League 2 of the Metro Bank One Day Cup.
