Glos v Somerset Stat Attack - the numbers stack up in our favour
18 June 2015
Gloucestershire go into the local derby with Somerset on Friday night with the stats on their side.
The team are currently (June 18) top of the South Group with eight points from seven matches while the visitors are sixth with five points from six games.
Despite having a losing record to their rivals overall, the home side's individual numbers in this year’s NatWest T20 Blast paint a positive picture ahead of Friday night’s sell out game.
All stats correct before NatWest T20 fixtures on Thursday 17 June 17.
- World Boss vs The Kling
West Indian Chris Gayle wowed the crowds during his short stay in Taunton but the stats overwhelmingly confirm Gloucestershire’s Michael Klinger as the undisputed “best in the West”.
The Glos skipper is the top run scorer in the NatWest T20 Blast competition (413) despite missing the first two games. He has made three of the top six scores - including a Glos record 126* at home to Essex Eagles – and has more hundreds than anyone else (3).
Michael has also struck the third most boundaries (50) in the Blast, one less than the now departed Gayle who still has the competition’s top score of 151* and is the third highest scorer overall (328).
- In the wickets…
Gloucestershire’s bowling attack has been in fine form throughout the competition. Spinner Tom Smith is the competition’s joint highest wicket-taker with 14, just two ahead of team mate David Payne (12) in fourth.
Smith’s 5-39 v Essex Eagles at home and Payne’s 5-24 against Middlesex last Sunday are two of the top five returns in this year’s Blast. Gloucestershire’s depth in their bowling is emphasised by the fact that another of their players, James Fuller is fifth in the list for dot balls with 65.
Somerset’s Jim Allenby has the best economy rate on either side (5.92).
- Extras…
Gloucestershire’s Ian Cockbain has scored more than double the number of runs of any Somerset player with the exception of Chris Gayle. His 267 puts him sixth in the country, 146 ahead of Somerset’s second highest scorer Jim Allenby.
Only one player – Essex’s Ryan Ten Doeschate – has taken more catches than Gloucestershire allrounder Benny Howell (7).
