Glos slip to six wicket T20 defeat against Glamorgan

10 June 2016

Gloucestershire slipped to a six wicket defeat against Glamorgan at a damp Brightside Ground.

After a rain-delayed start the visitors had the best of the conditions but made Michael Klinger’s men pay – cruising to their 169 run target with seven balls to spare.

To make matters worse Glos fast bowler Andrew Tye had to be removed from the attack by the umpires after just 2.1 overs after bowling two full tosses above waist high as he struggled to control the slippery ball.

In truth the game had probably escaped Gloucestershire’s grasp by this point thanks to an excellent partnership of 89 between  Colin Ingram (64 from 30 balls) and Aneurin Donald (48 not out from 39 balls).

Coming together at 51-2 in the seventh over – with openers Jacques Rudolph (16) and David Lloyd (17) gone -  the pair combined well with Ingram the aggressor and Donald happy to support him.

Ingram was particularly impressive, finding the gaps and hitting to the short leg side boundary with clinical precision.

He helped take Liam Norwell for 16 in the sixth over and Kieran Noema-Barnett for 15 in the twelfth before he was finally out, caught Klinger bowled Chris Dent in the controversial 15th.

With Tye forcibly removed from the attack after two balls above waist height, Dent was brought on to complete the over – which still had five balls left.

From his first – a free hit – Ingram switch hit him into the stand for six. A maximum down the ground followed next ball before he fell attempting a third consecutive blow over the boundaries.

Cooke (16) also fell before the close – caught Dent bowled Howell – and it was left to Donald to hit the winning runs with a four over extra cover.

For Glos, Tye (1-18) - who had impressed before his troubles - and the ever consistent Benny Howell (2-27) were the pick of the bowlers.

But in truth Gloucestershire were always likely to find it difficult to defend 169 having had the worst of the conditions.

With the ball seaming around and not coming onto the bat early-on, they fell to 30-3 with sixth over with the experienced Klinger (5), Marshall (3) and Dent (12) all caught out when trying to hit boundaries down the ground.

Ian Cockbain (37 off 23) played sensibly before getting a feather behind to Chris Cooke off Craig Meschede – a dismissal that seemed to leave the batsman bemused.

Playing in place of Tom Smith, Kieran Noema-Barnett marked his return to the side with his highest T20 score for Glos. His 37 came off 22 balls and included three fours and two sixes – a canny slog sweep and a delicious thump straight back down the ground.

Jack Taylor added an important 23 and Tye enjoyed an entertaining cameo, hitting 16 off five balls including sixes off both his first ball and the last of the innings.

For the visitors Dale Steyn (2-21) proved slippery and hard to get away while Wagg  (2-28) also made good use of the green tinge in the wicket.

Gloucestershire will hope to bounce back away at Essex next Thursday before entertaining Somerset in the “cider derby” at the Brightside Ground next Friday.
