7 February 2024
Gloucestershire Cricket is delighted to announce the signing of Australian all-rounder Beau Webster for the 2024 T20 Vitality Blast campaign.
A right-handed bat who bowls both right-arm medium and off-spin, Webster will join up with his new teammates in Bristol in late May. Eligible to play in the entirety of Shire’s Blast campaign, Webster will also be available for selection for Gloucestershire’s County Championship fixtures against Yorkshire and Glamorgan in June.
Hailing from Hobart, Tasmania, Webster has previous experience of playing in England having starred for Essex in the most recent edition of the Metro Bank One Day Cup last season. In eight matches for the Chelmsford outfit, Webster was among the top 10 best-performing bowlers in the competition with 14 wickets and an economy of 5.47. With the bat, the 30-year-old scored 280 runs at an average of 37.14.
Speaking of his excitement at signing for Gloucestershire, Webster said: “I am really excited and very grateful for the opportunity to join Gloucestershire for the 2024 Vitality Blast campaign.
“I’m looking forward to not only developing my game further in the UK but also to playing a part in helping the team win matches during my time here. I can’t wait to meet my teammates and get started.”
Webster started his career in 2014 at Tasmania, where he stills players now, and for whom this season he has scored 554 runs at an average of 61.55 in the 2023/24 Sheffield Shield, second only in the run-scoring chart to Cameron Bancroft. The towering 6’6” all-rounder also has 13 wickets from seven appearances in Australia’s top first-class competition.
In the Marsh Cup, a 50-over tournament, Webster has 247 runs from five matches at an average of 49.40 and also has five wickets to his name.
Alongside his exploits for Tasmania, Webster has also impressed in the recent Big Bash League with Melbourne Stars. Having played in nine matches Webster has scored the sixth-most runs in the T20 competition, 262, at an average of 43.66. In his last outing vs his hometown team Hobart Hurricanes, Webster scored an unbeaten 55.
Mark Alleyne, Head Coach at Gloucestershire Cricket, commented: “Beau is an incredibly well-rounded player who is experienced across all formats and offers a great option with both the bat and the ball.
“He’s enjoyed a good season in the Big Bash League and will bring with him a lot of knowledge of playing in T20 franchise cricket, particularly in Australia. Beau is a tall, powerful player who can have a terrific impact on a game, and I’m really excited to have Beau join us for the Vitality Blast and to see him help win cricket matches for Gloucestershire.”
