Players help raise £3500 for community projects at golf day

16 March 2016

Hamish Marshall, David Payne, Jack Taylor and Gareth Roderick lent their support to the Gloucestershire Cricket Board’s (GCB) community programme by taking part in its annual Golf Day.

Around £3500 was raised at the event at Cirencester Golf Club, which saw 27 teams made up of cricket clubs, GCB partners and supporters take to the tees.

In addition to the four Royal London One-Day Cup winners, other participants included former Glos players Paul Muchall, Tim Hancock – who is now the GCB’s head of performance – and current England fielding coach Chris Taylor.

GCB chief executive Steve Silk said: “It was wonderful to see so many people who believe in what we do coming together to raise money for our community programme.

“We are grateful to everyone who supported the day including the four players from Gloucestershire, who were fantastic throughout the day.”

Gloucestershire Cricket also supported the day by providing a number of raffle and auction prizes.

The Royal London One-Day Cup winners transferred some of their success from the cricket pitch to the golf course.

Hamish Marshall was part of Cirencester firm Aimteq Energy Management’s team – who won both the team and yellow ball competitions.

Fast bowler David Payne - who played with St Austell Brewery- also took home a prize after triumphing in one of the closest to the pin challenges.

David and Jack Taylor said they were pleased to support the annual golf day – especially in light of their own cricketing experience at school which included a combined total of one match.

David said: “We were very lucky to get where we did without cricket in school but not everyone is lucky enough to be taken to their local club like we were. It’s great to support the work the GCB do getting more schools getting involved and providing more opportunities for kids to play the game.”

Jack added: “We are seeing so many youngsters coming to the ground now, girls cricket is up and coming ridiculously fast and is great to see more and more people getting involved through the GCB.”
