Glos boys swap pads for peri-peri for Nando's Big Bash Launch
24 April 2018
Players from Gloucestershire Cricket swapped their pads for Peri-Peri at the launch of this year’s Nando’s Bristol Big Bash.
Six of the club’s professionals cooked in the kitchen and served diners at Nando’s Cabot Circus restaurant to promote the 2018 competition – which is the Bristol leg of the ECB City Cup.
Now in its fourth year, the IPL-style tournament – which uses pink balls and coloured clothing – will see teams made up of young adults from across the city go head-to-head in a T20 competition. As part of their sponsorship, Nando’s offers vouchers as man-of-the-match prizes and hosts the winning team for a free meal.
Big Bash organiser and Gloucestershire Cricket Board (GCB) community coach Masoor Khan said: “We are delighted to have Nando’s on board again. Their sponsorship really spices up the competition and raises its profile. The tournament has grown each year and the 2018 Big Bash is set to be bigger and better than ever.
“We are grateful for the Gloucestershire lads coming to support the launch – it looked like they really enjoyed the chance to swap their whites for aprons for a day.”
George Drissell, Callum Gregory, Kieron Noema-Barnett, Craig Miles, David Payne and Tom Smith all spent time welcoming customers, waiting tables and cooking on the grills during the two-hour Saturday lunch service.
Nando’s Cabot Circus manager Rik Green said he was impressed by the Glos players performance in the restaurant – particularly that of young spinner Drissell.
He said: “The players were fantastic at delivering our amazing food to our customers, natural “Nandocas” some would say. George could easily start here next week if he wants.
“We are delighted and proud to continue sponsoring the Nando’s Big Bash, it provides great opportunity for the development of young cricket players from across the city through an enjoyable and highly competitive tournament. It is exciting to think that the competition we support could one day unearth a star like these lads.”
In 2017, the Nando’s Big Bash was open to all 16-22-year-olds with a BS post code with the exception of Under 17 county players and those regularly appearing in the West of England Premier League. The entry requirements for 2018 will be announced shortly but you can still register your interest by emailing masoor.khan@glosccc.co.uk
The competition is completely free and all participants will receive a free ticket to watch Gloucestershire Cricket in a Vitality T20 Blast match home game.
The winners of the Big Bash will go on to represent Bristol in the regional finals against Cardiff with the hope of reaching the national finals at Leicestershire CCC’s New Road.
Gloucestershire fast bowler Craig Miles said: “The Nando’s Big Bash is a great initiative by the GCB. It is a fantastic opportunity for youngsters from different backgrounds to come together through cricket.
“I really enjoyed my time behind the tills and on the grills at Nando’s. It was great to have a different experience in another industry and I think the lads got a lot out of it.”
