Gladiators suffer at the hands of Styris

24 July 2012

Gloucestershire's hopes of reaching the Friends Life t20 Finals Day were blown away by some remarkably destructive batting from Sussex's Scott Styris at Hove tonight.

Styris hammered a 37-ball unbeaten century, which included scoring 30 of the 38 runs which came off an over bowled by fellow New Zealander James Fuller.

Fuller started the over with two no balls, which both went for four, and Styris also struck three sixes and two other boundaries in the remainder of the over. Sadly for Fuller, he now holds the world record for runs conceded in a Twenty20 over.

Matt Prior and Murray Goodwin also made rapid half-centuries as Sussex reached 230-4. And despite some big hitting from Dan Housego (47), Alex Gidman (44) and Hamish Marshall (42), the Gladiators finished well short on 191-8.

Reflecting on his innings, Styris joked: "I’m just pleased I got a few in the middle. I’m a lazy so and so these days!

"I’m just a slogger these days, they all seem to go even when I don’t want them to."

Hamish Marshall, Gloucestershire's skipper in Twenty20 and a former New Zealand team-mate of Styris, said: "I've seen it before from Scotty and he's a class player.

"We came here with good intentions to perform the way we have throughout the tournament. I'm proud of the lads for the way they've played in t20, but Scotty obviously pulled out a magnificent performance to halt our tournament."
