Get Behind Us For Must-Win Game - Hamish

5 July 2012

Hamish Marshall admits it is probably win-or-bust for Gloucestershire in tonight’s Friends Life t20 match against Worcestershire at Bristol (5.30pm start).

The captain is calling on his young team to win their last three Midlands/Wales/West Division games in the space of four days to earn a place in the quarter-finals.

Three washed out fixtures have contributed to a haul of seven points from as many games. If Gloucestershire win this evening they will move to within a point of leaders Worcestershire, who are on ten, along with Somerset and Warwickshire.

The Gladiators then end their group campaign with visits to Warwickshire tomorrow and Northamptonshire on Sunday.

Skipper Marshall said: “We probably have to win our last three games, which is a tall order. But we know what we have to do and we have shown ourselves capable of beating anyone on our day.

“The weather has made qualifying for the quarter-finals a bit of a lottery this season and it could have a further part to play over the weekend.

“All we can hope is that we are given the opportunity to secure the necessary points. Then it is up to us.”

Gloucestershire’s last game was the nine-wicket victory over Somerset at Taunton. Hopes of building on that tremendous performance evaporated when Monday’s clash with Welsh Dragons at Bristol was abandoned without a ball bowled.

“We were very frustrated because we desperately wanted to play,” said Hamish. “But the pitch and the outfield were very wet so the umpires had no choice other than to call the match off.”

The washout meant all six days of cricket between Gloucestershire and Glamorgan this season had been wrecked by rain. No play was possible in the LV=County Championship match between the clubs at Bristol or the Friends Life t20 game at Cardiff.

There are higher hopes of play this evening and Hamish is hoping Gloucestershire supporters rally behind the team as they attempt to reach the last eight for the first time since 2007.
