Geraint Will Be An Asset - Klinger

24 May 2014

Michael Klinger expects new signing Geraint Jones to be an asset on and off the pitch during his month on loan with Gloucestershire.

The 37-year-old Kent player will make his debut in the LV= County Championship match Derbyshire, starting tomorrow, having been recruited to cover for the absence of Gareth Roderick, who has broken his left index finger for the second time in two months.

During his stint with Gloucestershire, former England wicketkeeper Jones will be available for all forms of the game, although he won’t be able to play in the NatWest T20 Blast match against his parent club at Canterbury next Friday.

He will also be asked to work with young keeper Cameron Herring, who deputised for Roderick earlier this season, as well as in the latter stages of last week’s Championship win over Kent and the T20 victory over Middlesex at Bristol on Friday night.

Michael Klinger told this website: “It was a tough decision to sign Geraint because Cam Herring is a very good up-and-coming keeper, as he showed in the Middlesex game.

“He had a good crack playing in our first four Championship games with Gareth out. We feel he has a bit of work to do on his game and he would agree with that.

“Hopefully, Cam will see it as a positive that he will now get the chance to work with an international class player of Geraint’s experience for four weeks.

“Geraint is more than happy to help in that respect as well as playing for us, so he should be a great asset in more ways than one.”

With Ian Saxelby has undergone investigative surgery on a knee injury , David Payne struggling to overcome a bruised heel and Craig Miles still under treatment for a bulged disc, Gloucestershire are again without three key pace bowlers for the Derbyshire game.

Gloucestershire face 12 days on the road, playing Championship games against Derbyshire and Leicestershire, plus T20 visits to Kent and Sussex.

Squad v Derbyshire: M.Klinger (capt), C.Dent, W.Tavare, A.Gidman, H.Marshall, G.Jones (wkt), W.Gidman, B.Howell, J.Fuller, T.Smith, G.McCarter, L.Norwell.
