Frustration As Welsh Dragons Game Washed Out
2 July 2012
Gloucestershire and Welsh Dragons suffered huge frustration as their Friends Life t20 match at Bristol was abandoned without a ball bowled following a 6.30pm pitch inspection.
Heavy rain throughout the day had left the outfield saturated and, although the groundstaff worked tirelessly once it stopped, areas of the ground were too wet for the umpires to consider it safe for play.
Umpire Trevor Jesty explained: "The groundstaff have done all they can, but there are too many areas holding water and it would be too dangerous for the players even to play a five-over game
"When you walk on parts of the outfield water comes up over your shoe. It's very unfortunate, but conditions have to be as near as possible to being suitable for first class cricket and that simply isn't the case."
Both sides needed the two points to build a challenge in the Midlands/Wales/West Group and, while Gloucestershire remain in contention, the Dragons now face an almost impossible task to reach the quarter finals.
Gloucestershire now have seven points from as many games in the Midlands/Wales/West Division and can still mount a challenge to reach the quarter-finals by beating Worcestershire in their next fixture at the County Ground on Thursday.
Somerset and Warwickshire lead the group on ten points, but have played one game more, while Worcestershire are third on nine points from six games.
Ticket holders for tonight's game can exchange their tickets for another Gloucestershire match or request a refund. Please see our terms and conditions here for more information.
