Friday Nights Will Be Party Nights - Bracewell

10 March 2014

John Bracewell has assured supporters that everything possible will be done to make T20 cricket “The best show in town” this summer.

There is an appetising start to the campaign with a big derby clash against Somerset at Bristol on Friday May 16 and Bracewell wants the players to set a high standard in that game.

The club’s Director of Cricket said: “There are long-term and short-term priorities this season. The long-term ones concern our four-day game and developing our young squad into a potentially Championship-winning side.

“A short-term priority is Friday night cricket in the T20 when our aim will be to put on the best party in Bristol.

“We want to attract people from their work or out of the pubs to come to the Bristol County Ground and see the best show in town.

“That is going to take a change of psyche from our players in terms of engaging with the public and getting them involved in the game itself.

“We need to adopt a fearless attitude to our Friday night sport and realise that the key word is entertainment.

“At the Big Bash in Australia and the New Zealand domestic competition this winter we saw spectators come to games and feel part of them by taking away prizes for catches in the crowd.

“It was almost like they were part of the fielding unit. The ball is going to land in the crowd plenty of times in T20 cricket and it is as well to have those watching alert to that prospect.

“It will be up to each individual county what attractions they provide. We will say to people ‘where do you want to be on a Friday night?’ and hopefully the answer will be ‘at the Bristol County Ground’.

“That means we need to have a competitive team and it may be good for our young players to encourage them to let loose and not fear failure.

“We need to win, which we haven’t been doing regularly enough in the format. But the players have to understand where the modern game is going and particularly this aspect of it.

“The package we offer has to be entertaining, exciting and engaging and we will do our best to come up with that.”
