Ex-England Cricket physio Kirk Russell joins Gloucestershire
9 March 2023
Gloucestershire is delighted to announce the appointment of Kirk Russell as the Club’s Lead Physiotherapist.
Kirk has over 30 years experience as a Chartered Physiotherapist in professional sport and private practice, which includes a 12-year stint as Head Physiotherapist at England Cricket. Kirk will lead the Club’s Science and Medicine department and bring with him a wealth of experience of working in elite sport.
Kirk’s career in physiotherapy started at Northamptonshire CCC in 1994, where he spent seven years. He began working with England Cricket in 1998 and was a part of the management team during England Cricket's most successful period when the men’s team won three Ashes series and the World T20 title. After leaving his role with the England in 2011, Kirk went on to work for Tottenham Hotspur, Delhi Daredevils in the IPL and spent the last two summers working with Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred.
Kirk began working at Gloucestershire on a consultancy basis in October 2022 and said it was the positive environment in and around the Club that contributed to his decision to join The Shire on a full-time basis.
Kirk, who also runs a private clinic in Bath, commented: “I’m thrilled to join Gloucestershire and am really excited about working in County Cricket again. The atmosphere, work ethic and mentality at the Club has been excellent since I started working with the group and closely aligns with my own goals and values.
“It’s an exciting time to be at Gloucestershire and I’m looking forward to doing my bit to help the team during the upcoming season.”
Steve Snell, Performance Director at Gloucestershire Cricket, added: “I’m extremely pleased to have secured someone of Kirk’s experience and character to look after our professional squad.
“Kirk has been working with us on a consultancy basis throughout the winter and has showed a real calmness, a high level of clinical skill, and his care of the players has been first class. Kirk has many years of experience in elite cricketing environments so we’re delighted he wants to be a part of the project here at Gloucestershire.
“Kirk is a huge asset to our team and we’re thrilled to have him onboard.”
