Essex v Gloucestershire | Match Preview

10 July 2022

Gloucestershire travel to Chelmsford to take on Essex in round nine of the LV= Insurance County Championship on Monday. The Shire go into the match v fourth-placed Essex still without a win in Division One this season, but will be targeting that all-important victory against an Essex side that have won two out of their last five matches.

Last time out in the County Championship, Gloucestershire had to settle for a draw during a rain-affected meeting against Lancashire in Bristol. Chris Dent scored 110 in first innings of that match while Zafar Gohar hit 62, as Miles Hammond and James Bracey finished the second on 58 and 55 respectively when the rain began to fall. Youngster Tom Price and Ryan Higgins both claimed three wickets apiece as a number of players within the Glos camp showed positive signs of good form.

That draw v Lancashire was The Shire’s third in eight match, with the other two coming against Surrey and Northants.

Essex, on the other hand, have won three, drawn three and only lost one of their seven matches so far this season. Captained by Tom Westley, Essex have won their last two County Championship matches against Hampshire, by 12 runs, and against Lancashire, by an innings and 56 runs.

Gloucestershire are tenth in the table on 53 points, 28 points behind Northants in eighth place and Division One survival going into the match v Essex. The hosts, meanwhile, sit in fourth on 96 points, level on points with Yorkshire in fifth and 26 points behind Lancashire in third.

The Shire are boosted by a return from injury for Club captain, Graeme van Buuren, and Australia international, Marcus Harris, who has spent the last month away on tour with the national side in Sri Lanka.

The Price brothers, Tom and Ollie, keep their places in the matchday squad having both been involved in the recent home draw v Lancashire.

David Payne and Benny Howell are both unavailable for selection having been selected to represent England Lions v the touring South Africans.
