The game pits the top two teams in women’s cricket against each other and England captain Charlotte Edwards said she can’t wait to bring the women’s game to a new audience in Bristol.

She said: “I’m absolutely delighted that the second Royal London Women’s Ashes ODI will be played at the Bristol County Ground on July 23.  It is always good to play at new venues and spread the women’s international game across the country, so I’m already really looking forward to heading to Gloucestershire and playing in front of a passionate local crowd next summer.”

England are the current holders of the Ashes urn, having beaten Australia away in 2014 and at home in 2013. Like in those two series, the 2015 competition will be played over Test, ODI and T20s, with different points gained for victories in each format.

As well as seeing the top two teams in the world do battle, fans coming to the home of Gloucestershire Cricket on July 23 can look forward to seeing some of the biggest names in the women’s game.

Edwards, who recently completed her record 200th game as England captain is currently the second-ranked ODI batter behind Australia’s Meg Lanning. England wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor is the third-placed batter while her teammates Jenny Gunn (second) and Kathrine Brunt (fifth) are among the top five bowlers in One Day cricket.

There is also a chance that a Gloucestershire player could be  involved for the first time after allrounder Alex Macdonald was picked for the England Women’s Academy tour to face their Australian equivalents in Dubai from March 31 to April 13.

The ECB’s Head of England Women’s Cricket, Clare Connor, said: “With the Women’s Ashes fast approaching, I am certain that every one of the 14 players will grab this opportunity to stake a claim for a place in the England women’s Ashes squad this summer.”

Gloucestershire Cricket Board clubs and programmes officer Lisa Pagett, said she hoped the Ashes match at the Bristol County Ground would help growing number of female cricketers in Gloucestershire to follow in Alex’s footsteps.

She said: “It is a fantastic opportunity for our players to see the very best in the world right on their doorstep. The skill levels they have is incredible and I think it will surprise people that haven’t seen a lot of women’s cricket. We hope that cricket fans – male and female will  come along and support England.

“Hopefully some of our youngsters will use it as inspiration to further their own dreams of playing at the highest level in the future.”
