Ed Young's Letter From Australia Part One

7 December 2012

Ed Young is again spending the winter in Australia and will be providing regular updates for this website on his life and training regime in Adelaide.

Here is the first of those articles. You can also follow Ed’s progress on twitter- @EdYoung30

“I departed from Heathrow terminal three on the evening of Wednesday 3rd October, and after a five-hour stop-over in Singapore, which was spent reading Men's Health magazine, doing crosswords, enjoying my new iPad and sitting on the free foot massager, I arrived in Adelaide in the morning of Friday October 5th.

“I had a combined total sleep of about two hours on my flight and was surprisingly awake, so I had a bowl and bat in the afternoon and managed to survive to an acceptable bed time.

“We had a two-day game starting the next day, so was straight into it. Unfortunately, we lost, but I managed to get three wickets, There were times late in the day, standing at third slip with my jet lag, when I am glad the ball didn't come to me!

“After finding my feet, I fell into the routine of attending the gym, training and a bit of cricket coaching. There has only been a limited amount of trips to the beach, even though I report back to friends back home stating differently for jealousy reasons!

“My highlight so far came at the beginning of November and actually happened off the pitch. A casual run-of-the-mill walk around the supermarket soon changed into the best trip of my life when I discovered an English section - and to my pleasant surprise found my pride and joy, Marmite! All the Aussies rave about Vegemite, but quite frankly, it's rubbish!

“On November 21st, the Test Match was played at the Adelaide Oval. Prior to the game I signed up to do some net bowling against the Australians and the South Africans (don't worry it wasn't a revenge mission for them hitting me for 72 off my 10 overs during the summer).

“It was great to bowl at the likes of Michael Hussey, David Warner, Ricky Ponting and one of our 2012 overseas players, Ed Cowan. Warner and Hussey both got hundreds on day one. It was great to watch and great to catch up with Ed after his century in Brisbane.

“On the field my team, Adelaide University, have gone on a winning streak and we have already won more games than we did last year. I really enjoy the irony that we are a university team and not once has the team song run smoothly.

“I have just been promoted to open the batting after getting 120 off 106 balls in a one-day game when filling in the opening spot because of an injury.  I am relishing the challenge. It's great to be getting overs under my bel,t as well as training in the nets during the week, I am currently leading wicket-taker and opening the bowling in t20.

“I am off to Sydney again for the festive period, then off to Brisbane for New Year. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and I hope you are enjoying the snow and get a white Christmas!”
