Ed Young To Leave Gloucestershire
8 October 2013
Ed Young is leaving Gloucestershire with the best wishes of everyone at the club.
The 24-year-old left-arm spinner played in just one LV=County Championship match this summer, although he was selected for seven Yorkshire Bank 40 fixtures and two in the Friends Life t20.
Director of Cricket John Bracewell told this website: “It is with some regret that Ed will leave Gloucestershire Cricket.
“For three years he has been a major game player in our short form cricket, but with the signing of Tom Smith and three young promising off-spinners on our books we are unable to carry any more.
“I am sure Ed's cricketing career is not complete and we wish him well in its continuance.”
Ed initially signed a two-year development contract with the club in August 2010, having played for Oxford MCCU and represented the Unicorns in the CB40 competition.
The 2011 season saw Ed become a regular and important member of Gloucestershire’s one-day team. He took 11 T20 wickets in 15 appearances and also played in 11 CB40 games, as well as three in the Championship.
He then went to Australia to spend part of the winter developing his game at the Darren Lehmann Academy in Perth, earning excellent reports for his work ethic in a testing environment that included rigorous fitness training as well as cricket.
The 2012 season saw Ed make eight County Championship appearances, as well as being an ever-present in the club’s CB40 campaign taking 15 wickets, before heading back to Adelaide for the winter.
But this summer he picked up a wrist injury while fielding and found it hard to regain a place in the side, particularly after Tom Smith arrived on loan from Middlesex. Tom has since signed a three-year contract.
