Ed Out To Make Up For Lost Time

24 July 2013

Ed Young goes into tonight’s Friends Life t20 match with Warwickshire at Edgbaston (7.00 pm start) looking to build on an impressive comeback from injury.

The left-arm spinner took 3-21 on his return to the first team in Sunday’s ten-wicket win over Glamorgan at Cheltenham and followed up by scoring 65 not out in a Second XI Trophy match against Middlesex.

Director of Cricket John Bracewell has described the absence of Young with a broken wrist as a key factor in Gloucestershire’s disappointing T20 campaign.

And the player himself is desperate to make up for lost time after a frustrating spell on the sidelines.

Ed told this website: “It’s more than five weeks since I had an operation to put a screw in my wrist. For part of that time I was in a cast so I couldn’t do much other than hang around with the guys whenever possible so I didn’t feel separated from the group.

“Things became easier when I was able to get back in the gym and for the last two weeks I have been allowed to bowl, the injury being to my right wrist.

“That meant that when I was finally given the all-clear it was not a case of having to play catch-up. The last stage was to be allowed to take part in the impact sides of the game, ie batting and fielding.

“That came after a final set of X-rays last week. I couldn’t wait to get back on the field because I get very frustrated watching.”

Ed suffered his injury in the LV=County Championship match against Lancashire at Liverpool at the end of May.

“I was standing at mid-wicket when a delivery from Benny Howell was hit firmly by Ashwell Prince. I tried to make an athletic stop to my right and unfortunately the ball struck my wrist.

“I thought it was just a knock or a bruise and carried on fielding. But when I woke up the next morning my wrist was very stiff and I knew something more serious had happened.”

Despite the discomfort, Ed insisted on batting if his team needed him and helped secure a dramatic draw with Gloucestershire nine wickets down in their second innings.

Now he is hoping to ensure the Friends Life campaign finishes on a high note with three Midlands/Wales/West Division games to go, including the big local derby against Somerset at Bristol on Friday evening.

Skipper Michael Klinger is insisting that his team put everything into tonight’s clash with Warwickshire and is looking for some consistency after the excellent performance against Glamorgan.

Gloucestershire Squad from: Michael Klinger, Hamish Marshall, Chris Dent, Ian Cockbain, Dan Christian, Alex Gidman, Benny Howell, Gareth Roderick, Ed Young, Tom Smith, David Payne, Craig Miles, Matt Taylor
